Crime Free Multi Housing Program

The health and well-being of any community are directly reflected in the quality of life in the community's neighborhoods. Drug trafficking, gang activity, violence, theft and other illegal activity, once established, can quickly destroy the quality of life. Too often, these problems have developed because residents and landlords have looked only to the police or "the system" to prevent or correct them.

Illegal activity which lowers our quality of life--which threatens out health & safety--is a community problem, not just a police problem. In our society, we need to regard police as that part of our community which helps the rest of us deal with safety and security issues. One of the major principles of Community Oriented Policing is a partnership between the police and the community. Police cannot work in a vacuum; rather they must work in partnership with citizens--landlords, tenants, and homeowners.

What is the Crime-Free Multi Housing Program?

It is a partnership between the Riverdale Police Department, your apartment owner/manger and you, the tenant.

There are several aspects of the program. Properties accepted into the Riverdale program must meet guidelines for adequate lighting, fire codes, building codes and reasonable measure to help increase the safety of tenants.

What does the program involve?

It involves an intensive applicant screening process to weed out applicants planning illegal behavior or having been involved in significant criminal activity in the past. The program requires tenants to be accountable for illegal activities committed on the premises; their own activities and the actions of those housed within their apartment. The most important aspect of the program is to develop a 'sense of community'. Good tenants can get to know each other and the manager. They begin to have a sense of community.
