PLANTING TREES IN THE PARK STRIP

If you are planning on planting a tree in your park strip (the space between your sidewalk and the street) then there's a few things you need to be aware of. Riverdale City will only allow certain trees to be planted in the park strip. Past experience has shown that many trees will develop root systems which can damage sidewalks, curbs, gutters, or streets, causing a safety hazard. To avoid this type of damage, only trees with non threatening root systems are allowed in the parking strip.

A free tree permit is required before you can plant a tree in the park strip. To view and print the required permit Click Here.

For parking strips three (3) feet wide and larger, the following trees are acceptable:

Golden Rain
Any Flowering Plum
Any Flowering Cherry
Any Flowering Pear
American Red Bud
Flowering Crabapple (all non-weeping varieties acceptable)
Lavalle Hawthrorn (Crataegus lavallei)
Carriere Hawthorn (Crataegus carrierei)
Washington Hawthorn (Crataegus phaenopyrum)
Paul Sarlet Hawthorn
Imperial Honey Locust
May Day Tree (Prunus padus)
Amur Maple (Acer ginnala)

Note: For parking strips less than three (3) feet wide, under any overhead utility wires, or on corner lots, consult with the Public Works Director at (801) 394-5541 ext. 1217.

If you have a type of tree you wish to plant that you feel won't cause damage, you may check with the Public Works Director for approval.
