If you are planning on planting a tree in the park strip (the space between the sidewalk and the curb), there are a few things you should know.

As a tree grows, some root systems will push up the sidewalks, curbs, gutters, or the streets causing a safety hazard. To avoid further problems, the City has compiled a list of trees suitable for planting in park strips.

For parking strips three (3) feet wide and larger:

Golden Rain
Any Flowering plum
Any Flowering Cherry
Any Flowering Pear
American Red Bud
Flowering Crabapple (all non-weeping varieties acceptable)
Lavalle Hawthorn (Crataegus lavallei)
Carriere Hawthorn (Crataegus carrierei)
Washington Hawthorn (Crataegus phaenopyrum)
Paul Sarlet Hawthorn
Imperial Honey Locust
May Day Tree (Prunus padus)

Note: For parking strips less than three (3) feet wide or under any overhead Utility wires, consult with the Public Works Administrator at 801-394-5541 ext 1217.
