From Crisis to Restoration
Progress is Positive!

Homeowners, residents, and volunteers work to restore homes and yards continues at various rates of progress. Only one thing appears certain at this point, the progress is positive and the pace varies with each residence.

With many residents having to return to their normal work schedules and occupations, the restoration efforts are as varied as the schedules of the individuals involved.

Much of the work removing dirt and debris has been completed. Many of the homes have been cleaned to an extent which has allowed for the interior systems (heating, electrical, water) to be repaired or replaced. Some of the homes are in various stages of refinish work with the replacement of sheetrock, which will be followed by painting, carpeting, etc.

Yards are beginning to show new signs of life with grass, new sod, flowers, etc. showing in many yards.

Volunteer Support

Volunteers continue to play an important role in assisting the flood victims in their restoration efforts. Due to the terrific efforts of our friends from surrounding neighborhoods, and communities volunteers continue to make themselves available at the homeowner=s request.

Most often, those in need are coordinating with a project leader and/or a local Riverdale volunteer representative. These two individuals have some access to both the skilled trades and the labor force necessary to assist in continuing the support for each homeowner in need.

Some specialty needs that still exist are:

Plumbers
Electricians
Carpenters
Sheetrockers
Painters

Disaster/Casualty Loss - Taxes

(Per Sandra Tomney, Communications Office, Ogden Service Center, IRS)

The Internal Revenue Service has a workbook, Publication 584, designed to help you calculate your loss in the event of a disaster (this flood), casualty, or theft. It has worksheets and schedules designed to aid you in calculating the loss to your residency and personal possessions.

To order this workbook, call our toll-free telephone number 1-800-829-3676 or you can contact a customer service representative for on-line assistance at 1-800-829-1040.

Money Issues

Like the residents, the city still waits to hear from state and federal officials as to what, if any, financial assistance will be made available.

Small amounts of funds (slightly over $11,000 total as of today) are continuing to accumulate with the disaster accounts set up at the City and at AFCU.

All of these funds will be used to directly benefit affected residents on a yet-to-be-determined equitable basis.
