AFFECTED PROPERTY OWNERS UPDATE Friday July 16
RIVERDALE CITY INFORMATION: Thank you all for your positive attitude in working through this disaster, and for helping your neighbors as well. We have noticed one item of concern. Please conserve on water usage where possible in your clean-up efforts in order to avoid extra stress on the water system. Our trash hauler will be working with us Saturday for dumping of residential trash containers. If you were missed by the regular pick-up, please call 394-6616 and we will work with the hauler to make sure the trash is picked up from your home. Thank you again for all your efforts and your cooperation. Riverdale City will continue to help you in every way possible to recover from this disaster.
WEBER-MORGAN HEALTH DEPARTMENT: It is important to take appropriate precautions when working in the flood disaster area. Clean up workers should dress appropriately, including footwear and gloves. Dust masks may also be appropriate, particularly as the mud dries out and the dust becomes air-borne. It is imperative that workers wash their hands frequently, particularly before handling food. Gloves, masks, and hand cleaners are being made available to all clean up workers. Health Department inspectors have been through the area today, distributing booklets regarding precautions and methods for repairing your flood damaged properties. If you have not received these publications, please call 394-6616. A First Aid Station has been set up adjacent to the mobile command center at 1351 W. Ritter Drive. Public health nurses at the station will be able to assist with first aid needs and concerns. The smell which is prevalent in the disaster area is not sewage contamination. The Health Department has sampled and tested and found nothing to indicate the presence of raw sewage. The smell is "decomposing organic material," or rotting grass, leaves, etc. It is a smell similar to the lake smell when the lake level drops. While it is unpleasant, it does not pose a health risk. The Health Department is exploring ways to mitigate the smell. Trauma counseling will be made available to those affected by the flood. Teams of licensed clinical social workers, through the office of Dr. William Endy (399-1600) will be at the Carl Cook residence. Counselors will be at 1351 W. Ritter Drive on Saturday, July 17, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. At least one parent must accompany children for these services. This service is provided through the Swanson Family Foundation.
RED CROSS INFORMATION: The Red Cross can assist with immediate, short-term personal and family needs such as clothing, food, shelter. When you register with the Red Cross, you can inform them of your needs and they will work to assist you. Contact the Red Cross at 627-0000. Family service workers are providing families with cleaning supplies, groceries, laundry supplies, toiletries, bed linens, towels and washcloths. Red Cross mental health workers are also on-site full-time to identify the psychological and emotional impacts of the disaster on relief workers and on persons and communities affected by this disaster. Their role is to provide education and emotional support and, if the situation requires, acquaint clients and workers with mental health resources and services in or near the Riverdale Area.
POST OFFICE INFORMATION: Mail delivery for disaster area residents will continue at the Community Center through Tuesday, July 20. The Post Office will then re-evaluate the situation to determine whether it is possible to start regular residential delivery.
