AFFECTED PROPERTY OWNERS UPDATE Thursday July 15
CLEAN UP INFORMATION: Different types of equipment are on-site in the disaster area to remove mud from yards and houses. Lighter equipment, such as tractors, may be able to scrape out large amounts of mud from yards. From there, it is generally necessary to hand shovel the mud into wheelbarrows, etc. Property owners may move the mud from their homes and yards to the streets. Heavy equipment will continue to be available to remove mud from the streets to facilitate the clean-up. City inspectors are working to check homes to ensure that structures are safe before people enter homes for clean up. Assistance from a structural engineer is also available. As residents proceed with repairs, it is important to obtain building permits and have work inspected. Permit fees will be waived for flood damage repairs. The Red Cross will provide clean-up kits which include supplies for cleaning homes once the mud has been removed. These kits include items such as bucket, scrub brush, and cleaning liquid. Other available supplies include shovels, gloves, masks, hoses, water containers, boxes, power brooms with fuel. These items are made available by the Swanson Family Foundation at their Coleman Lane site. Some of these items may also be available at the Red Cross stations. In general, utility services have been restored to homes in the Golden Spike Area. Most homes in the Pinebrook Area continue to be without electricity and gas services. Utah Power will need to inspect and possibly repair underground utility lines before they can determine it is safe to restore service in that area. Questar personnel will inspect gas lines and appliances prior to restoring gas services. All personnel involved are working to restore utilities as quickly as possible. The Extension Service will be providing information regarding the impact of the flood on yards and gardens. We will make that information available to residents as soon as we have it. HEALTH CONCERNS: It is important to take appropriate precautions when working in the flood disaster area. Clean up workers should dress appropriately, including footwear and gloves. Dust masks may also be appropriate, particularly as the mud dries out and the dust becomes air-borne. It is imperative that workers wash their hands frequently, particularly before handling food. Gloves, masks, and hand cleaners are being made available to all clean up workers. The Weber-Morgan Health Department will have inspectors coming through the area Friday, July 16. The Health Department will also be providing information packets regarding appropriate clean up and disinfectant methods, which will be distributed to residents. A First Aid Station has been set up adjacent to the mobile command center at 1351 W. Ritter Drive. Public health nurses at the station will be able to assist with first aid needs and concerns. Food storage which may have been contaminated by flood waters should be handled appropriately. Boxed or bagged food items which have been in contact with flood water/mud should be discarded. Generally, items in glass jars with screw top lids which have been in contact with flood water/mud should be discarded. Canned goods, if seams are intact and cans are undented, may be washed off and generally will be safe to consume. Dont forget to label the cans with a permanent marker, since paper labels will come off when the cans are washed. Trauma counseling will be made available to those affected by the flood. Teams of licensed clinical social workers, through the office of Dr. William Endy (399-1600) will be at the Carl Cook residence. Counselors will be at 1351 W. Ritter Drive on Friday, July 16, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; and on Saturday, July 17, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. At least one parent must accompany children for these services. This service is provided through the Swanson Family Foundation.

You may also consider contacting your lender to discuss your mortgage the possibility of a refinance or a suspension of payments to assist you at this time. Riverdale City has engaged all its resources to help relieve the impact on the flood victims, including equipment and staff. The City will also assist with other fees under its control, including excess water usage fees due to clean-up efforts, building permit fees, and fees for debris removal.
