Riverdale City continues to assist the Davis-Weber Canal Company in its clean-up efforts following a breech in the canal that occurred Sunday, July 11, at approximately 12:15 p.m. There is a great deal of water being used in the clean up effort. Please conserve on water usage wherever possible to avoid added stress on the water system. If you have an automated sprinkling system, please consider reducing the frequency of watering. Thank you. For details on the story and photographs of the disaster area, please see links to news agencies. Assistance with communications has been provided by Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES). Led by Weber County ARES emergency coordinator Vance Hunt (KC7SUM), ARES has provided all amateur radio support and dispatching services. According to Mr. Hunt, there have been amateur radio operators from four counties participating in this project Weber County, 12; Davis County, 24; Box Elder County, 6; and Salt Lake County, 12. Special thanks to Hall Blankenship (KC7RAF), Tyler Griffith (N7UWX), and the Davis County ARES for their great support. ARES operates through the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), and is regulated through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Mel Parks (N5UVP) is president of the Utah Chapter of ARES and section manager of ARRL. John Maybe (W7CWK) is the Utah area coordinator of communications. ARES assistance with the flood disaster recovery has been invaluable. Its members are to be commended for the sacrifices they have made to be here and assist in this crisis. Senator Orrin Hatch has contacted Mayor Jones. He extends his appreciation and admiration to flood victims and volunteers. Sen. Hatch sends his love to the community, and has offered whatever assistance he may be able to render. A representative from Congressman Jim Hansens office was on-site earlier this week. He offers his assistance as well. State Representative Carl Saunders, State Senator Joe Hull, Weber County Commissioners Glen Burton, Camille Cain, and Joe Bischoff have also extended offers of assistance to flood victims and the community. AFFECTED PROPERTY OWNERS UPDATE Monday July 19
RIVERDALE CITY INFORMATION: Riverdale City officials are working with state and federal officials to determine what assistance will be available to residents in recovering from this disaster. As soon as the information is available, it will be passed along to you. We are still asking that you conserve on water usage where possible in your clean-up efforts in order to avoid extra stress on the water system. Residential trash collection has been difficult in the disaster area. There will be an extra trash pickup Wednesday morning along Ritter Drive only. Regular trash collection will be Friday morning. Please put trash cans out the night before to ensure pickup. Thank you again for all your efforts and your cooperation. Riverdale City will continue to help you in every way possible to recover from this disaster.
WEBER-MORGAN HEALTH DEPARTMENT: It is important to take appropriate precautions when working in the flood disaster area. Clean up workers should dress appropriately, including footwear and gloves. Dust masks may also be appropriate, particularly as the mud dries out and the dust becomes air-borne. It is imperative that workers wash their hands frequently, particularly before handling food. Gloves, masks, and hand cleaners are being made available to all clean up workers. The smell which is prevalent in the disaster area is not sewage contamination. The Health Department has sampled and tested and found nothing to indicate the presence of raw sewage. The smell is "decomposing organic material," or rotting grass, leaves, etc. It is a smell similar to the lake smell when the lake level drops. While it is unpleasant, it does not pose a health risk. The Health Department is exploring ways to mitigate the smell. RED CROSS INFORMATION: The Red Cross can assist with immediate, short-term personal and family needs such as clothing, food, shelter. When you register with the Red Cross, you can inform them of your needs and they will work to assist you. Contact the Red Cross at 627-0000. Family service workers are providing families with cleaning supplies, groceries, laundry supplies, toiletries, bed linens, towels and washcloths. Red Cross mental health workers are also on-site full-time to identify the psychological and emotional impacts of the disaster on relief workers and on persons and communities affected by this disaster. Their role is to provide education and emotional support and, if the situation requires, acquaint clients and workers with mental health resources and services in or near the Riverdale Area.
POST OFFICE INFORMATION: Mail delivery for disaster area residents will continue at the Community Center through Tuesday, July 20. The Post Office will then re-evaluate the situation to determine whether it is possible to start regular residential delivery.
EXTENSION SERVICE INFORMATION: Information regarding flood damaged yards and gardens is being included with this update. In addition, U.S.U. soils experts strongly caution that clay soils tend to be high in alkaline salts which may permeate into other soils.
MOSQUITO ABATEMENT INFORMATION: Weber County mosquito abatement personnel have visited the disaster area several times in the past week to check for mosquito larvae in standing water. No unusual problems have been found to date. Mosquito abatement will continue to monitor the area and spray any potential problem areas. RESIDENTS / PROPERTY OWNERS RESOURCE LIST Monday July 19 These resources are made available to affected property owners and residents only (those cleaning up damage to their own property).
