Riverdale City continues to assist the Davis-Weber Canal Company in its clean-up efforts following a breech in the canal that occurred Sunday, July 11, at approximately 12:15 p.m. Senator Orrin Hatch has contacted Mayor Jones. He extends his appreciation and admiration to flood victims and volunteers. Sen. Hatch sends his love to the community, and has offered whatever assistance he may be able to render. A representative from Congressman Jim Hansens office was on-site earlier this week. He offers his assistance as well. State Representative Carl Saunders, State Senator Joe Hull, Weber County Commissioners Glen Burton, Camille Cain, and Joe Bischoff have also extended offers of assistance to flood victims and the community. VOLUNTEER UPDATE Wednesday July 21 Volunteer assistance is needed at this time to assist in clean-up efforts. However, the need is less intense than it was originally. Please call 394-5541 ext. 214 before you report to the check-in site. Able-bodied persons age 16 and over please report to the volunteer check-in site at approximately 5386 South 1050 West (in front of Motor Vu Drive-In). Dress appropriately old clothing and shoes, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, etc. Volunteers with equipment:
At this time, there is not a need for donated food (boxed and canned goods) or donated clothing. Donations of prepared foods, crushed ice, cold bottled water and other cold canned or bottled beverages for clean-up workers continue to be appreciated. Please call the Red Cross at 627-0000 to make arrangements. Thank you to all those individuals, businesses, and organizations who have generously contributed time and personnel, equipment, supplies, meals and beverages, etc. Your assistance is greatly appreciated!! AFFECTED PROPERTY OWNERS UPDATE Wednesday July 21
RIVERDALE CITY INFORMATION: This will be the last regular daily update delivered to residents in the disaster area. We will prepare and deliver updates on an "as needed" basis as circumstances change. Effective Wednesday, July 21, the Riverdale City Disaster Support Coordination Center will be relocating. Please call the following phone numbers with your needs and request for assistance in cleanup. Mon Fri 8 am 5 pm 394-5541 ext 214 Mon Fri 5 pm 8 pm 621-6084 Saturday 8 am 8 pm 621-6084 The Disaster Support Coordination Center will be closed for the Pioneer Day holiday, Saturday, July 24. Riverdale City officials are working with state and federal officials to determine what assistance will be available to residents in recovering from this disaster. As soon as the information is available, it will be passed along to you. Residential trash collection has been difficult in the disaster area. There will be an extra trash pickup Wednesday morning along Ritter Drive only. Regular trash collection will be Friday morning. Please put trash cans out the night before to ensure pickup. A "lost and found" has been established at Colemans field, corner of 1250 West and Ritter Drive. If you have borrowed equipment and supplies from the Swanson Family Foundation (the trailer at Colemans field), and are finished with them, please return them to Swanson so they can be made available for others. This would include items such as power equipment and fuel cans, wheelbarrows, shovels, etc. If it is difficult for you to return the items yourself, please call Riverdale City and we will arrange to have the items picked up from your home. Thank you. Cleaning supplies laundry detergent, industrial cleaners, etc. have been made available for your use in cleanup. These supplies, donated by Huish Detergents, are available at the Swanson trailer in Colemans field.
RED CROSS INFORMATION: Effective July 22, the Red Cross will be relocating out of the disaster area. You may contact them at 2955 Harrison Blvd., Ogden. Phone 627-0000. The Red Cross can assist with immediate, short-term personal and family needs such as clothing, food, shelter. In addition, family service workers are providing families with cleaning supplies, groceries, laundry supplies, toiletries, bed linens, towels and washcloths.
POST OFFICE INFORMATION: Regular residential mail delivery has resumed. If you have difficulty with your mail delivery, please contact the Post Office at 627-4437.
EXTENSION SERVICE INFORMATION: U.S.U. soils experts strongly caution that clay soils tend to be high in alkaline salts which may permeate into other soils. A landscape architect who has visited the area. He advises, for yards which have been covered with sandy soil, the sandy soil can be mixed in with existing soils. This will improve drainage in the yard. For yards which have been covered with clay mud, he advises that the clay should be removed if possible. Where that is not possible, sand could be mixed with the clay to improve the condition of the soil.
MOSQUITO ABATEMENT INFORMATION: Weber County mosquito abatement personnel have visited the disaster area several times in the past week to check for mosquito larvae in standing water. No unusual problems have been found to date. Mosquito abatement will continue to monitor the area and spray any potential problem areas.
