Candidate for City Council: Karina E. Merrill
Karina Merrill is running for City Council in Riverdale because of her love for this community and her wish to see it continue to be a desirable place to live and raise a family. The Merrill’s have absolutely loved living in Riverdale and raising their son, as well as helping to raise Jared’s three daughters. They thoroughly enjoy frequenting all of the lovely parks, open play areas, rivers and pools available to them throughout Riverdale. Karina wants to be a part of the planning and preparing for the challenges that her community currently faces and will continue to face with such rapid growth happening in Utah. “I will be an independent voice on the council, not beholding to special interests or individuals who may have ulterior motives and agendas,” she affirms.
Karina’s perspective as a small business owner makes her uniquely qualified to make decisions related to smart growth, economic development and limiting government overreach. She believes, “Now, more than ever it is especially important that we are involved in our local communities and government. I believe true change and upholding the constitutional government and individual liberty starts at the local level. I am not a politician, but I do desire to be a public servant and honor the values of our community. As a small business owner, mother, and humanitarian, I have gained many perspectives into the importance of placing principle over popularity. I believe in limited government involvement, fiscal competence, and less regulation for small businesses. I honor and support those who maintain law and order in our community. I strongly believe that city council is non-partisan and I vow to represent everyone no matter what political party they belong to.”
Karina believes we are all more alike than different, and that any differences we may have can be helpful in finding ways to work together, to find solutions for the betterment of our community, state and country. She understands what it is like when the city, and most of its council, will not listen or communicate with its residents. She emphatically states, “That will never happen if I am elected to represent you in Riverdale. Listening, communicating, and helping people to feel heard and understood can resolve major issues that arise, and I am committed to doing that. I have extensive training in human communication, especially when it comes to conflict management and finding resolutions. Therefore, I vow to represent all members of our community regardless of race, creed, or socio-economic status and make sure everyone has a voice.”
Karina has successfully earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Sociology/Criminology, Interpersonal Communication and work in Marriage and Family Therapy. She has been involved in student councils, as well as community involvement projects, since she was in high school. She is also a proud volunteer and supporter of Operation Underground Railroad and participates in National and local efforts to end the modern day slavery of children.
